Frequently Asked Questions
How does CarbCam estimate carbs?
CarbCam uses multiple methods: barcode scanning looks up products in the USDA and Open Food Facts databases, on-device OCR reads nutrition labels directly, and Advanced AI (CarbCam Pro) visually analyzes any food using Google's Gemini models.
How accurate are the results?
Results are estimates for general informational purposes. Barcode lookups tend to be the most accurate since they use verified database entries. AI-based estimates are approximations. Always verify against the official Nutrition Facts label, especially if you have a medical condition requiring precise carb counting.
What is CarbCam Pro?
CarbCam Pro is an optional monthly subscription that unlocks Advanced AI analysis. This lets you point your camera at any food — even without a barcode or visible label — and get a carb estimate powered by AI. It includes a 3-day free trial.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple. Go to Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions on your iPhone, find CarbCam, and tap Cancel. You can also manage subscriptions from the App Store app or at apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.
How do I restore my purchases on a new device?
Open CarbCam, go to Settings, and tap "Restore Purchases." Make sure you are signed in to the same Apple ID you used to subscribe.
Does CarbCam work offline?
Barcode scanning, OCR, and on-device AI analysis (when available) work without an internet connection. However, barcode database lookups and Advanced AI analysis require an internet connection.
What data does CarbCam collect?
CarbCam does not require an account and does not collect personally identifiable information. On-device processing stays on your device. When using Advanced AI, images are sent to Google's Gemini API. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Can I delete my scan history?
Yes. Scan history is stored locally on your device. You can delete individual entries or clear all history from within the app.
What is the Quick Launch feature?
Quick Launch adds a shortcut button on the results screen to quickly open a companion app (such as Dexcom, mySugr, or Omnipod) so you can manually log your carbs. No data is shared with these apps.
It says "Downloading Apple Intelligence models" and never finishes
The Apple Intelligence feature requires Apple Intelligence, which must be enabled on your device. Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn on Apple Intelligence. If you don't see this option, your device may not support Apple Intelligence or you may need to update to the latest iOS version. Once enabled, the required models will download automatically. If you prefer not to use Apple Intelligence, you can disable the Apple Intelligence method in CarbCam's settings and use Barcode scanning or Advanced AI instead.
